Now in it's 6th year, the Silver Spring Sean-nos Competition/Exhibition will feature dancers from all ages from the DC metro area, as well as the best Irish music DC has to offer.
Sean-nos Dancing is an improvised, battering style step dance from the Connemara Gaeltacht (Irish speaking region on the West Coast of Ireland). For centuries, dancers have been getting together at local crossroads competitions as a form of entertainment to battle for bragging rights within their communities.
Competitions will be held in solo sean-nos dancers (ages 3-85), and sean-nos mixed age duets. There will be exhibitions in old-style step dancing and sean-nos singing (ornamented, unaccompanied singing in the Irish language), as well as social dancing for all in attendance.
Live music on button accordion will be provided by National Heritage Fellow Billy McComiskey and Peter Brice.
Special guest judges include Maureen Ui Cheide (acclaimed sean-nos singer and dancer, and native Irish speaker).
